Lipids in skin come from two sources. It may be produced by cells in the stratum corneum, or it may be produced by sebaceous glands. Oily skin is caused when the sebaceous glands overproduce lipids. Consequently, the lipid balance of the skin is altered. The skin continues to expand, but this causes the structures between the cells to loosen. As a result, skin dries out easily as moisture escapes from the skin. The skin is greasy on the outside and dry inside. Many so-called oil-controlling products available on the market contain alcohol/retinol or acids which actually dry out the skin even more! The best method is to gently cleanse the facial area with moisturizing products high in ceramide to promote restoration of healthy skin.
